WASHINGTON, DC — CulturalDC, the region’s leader in developing arts space and presenting emerging contemporary art, announced today that Anne Corbett will be stepping down from her role as Executive Director to join Vision McMillan Partnership as Project Director.
Corbett has been with CulturalDC since its inception almost 14 years ago. “Anne has been a tremendous force in the community and at CulturalDC. We will miss her but know that the community will continue to benefit from her leadership as she takes on her new role,” said Anita Ayerbe, CulturalDC’s Board President. “CulturalDC is well positioned to move forward – we just completed a successful rebranding initiative and have an engaged board with a strong senior leadership team,” Ayerbe continued.
Corbett was instrumental in the creation of the organization with just a $50,000 grant from the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation and donated office space at the Downtown BID. CulturalDC now has a full-time staff of 11 and two venues: Flashpoint, located downtown at Gallery Place and Source, on 14th street. As Executive Director, Corbett has established the organization as instrumental in affecting the way arts space is developed in our region.
Announcing her departure, Anne stated, “I have enjoyed fourteen years of working in what I often describe as my dream job, but I have an incredible opportunity to work with the community in a new way. I am confident that the organization is well situated to continue its integral work in the DC arts industry with strong support from the Board of Directors and the talent and expertise of the staff. I look forward to maintaining a strong relationship with the organization and supporting its bright future.”
During Corbett’s tenure, CulturalDC has dramatically impacted the region’s landscape playing a key role in creating 18 new venues totaling over 250,000 square feet of arts space. Corbett’s accomplishments include playing a key role in the early days of Artomatic, an unjuried event that showcases artistic talents; creating artist housing at the Mather Studios and Loree Grand; facilitating catalytic arts spaces like Atlas Performing Arts Center, GALA Hispanic at the Tivoli, Brookland Artspace Lofts and Woolly Mammoth. She has also led critically-acclaimed arts programming initiatives through Flashpoint Gallery, Mead Theatre Lab, Source Festival and various public art activities including Construct, Pop-Up Gala and Sweet. Anne’s service and leadership in the arts community has been recognized frequently, including the Meyer Foundation Exponent Award, The Washington Post Award for Innovative Leadership in the Theatre Community given by the Helen Hayes Awards and the Mayor’s Arts Award for Outstanding Service.
Anne is pursuing a challenging new position as Project Director for Vision McMillan Partnership guiding the 25-acre redevelopment of the historic McMillan Sand Filtration Site by JAIR LYNCH Development Partners, Trammell Crow and EYA.
The Board of Directors is initiating a national executive search led by Tanja Castro, President-Elect of the CulturalDC Board. CulturalDC Deputy Director Travis Bowerman will serve as the Interim Executive Director.
