CONNECT 4: Brian Davis + Nekisha Durrett
MLK Jr. Memorial Library, Great Hall | 901 G St NW Washington, DC 20001
CONNECT 4 is a series of temporary public art projects in the lobby of Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. This series takes our visual arts program off-site and enlivens the library space with work by local contemporary artists. The participating artists are Brian Davis, Nekisha Durrett, Sam Scharf and Anna Tsouhlarakis.
The series will kick-off with work from two artists – Brian Davis’ Circuit and Nekisha Durrett’s O’er Yonder. Circuit consists of vintage and contemporary chairs arranged in an outward-facing circle. The chairs and lights are connected by a structure of boards, bolts and wires that respond and switch on and off whenever a chair is occupied. This piece will encourage visitors to become active participants in an artwork and is on view through June 9. O’er Yonder is inspired directly by graphic novels from the Library’s collection and will feature large-scale color illustrations. A copy of Durrett’s graphic novel reading list is available here. O’er Yonder will be on view through June 8th.
There will be an opening reception with the artists on Tuesday, May 7 from 5-7PM in the lobby of the Library. Related programming in collaboration with the DC Youth Slam Poetry team will take place on May 22 from 4:30 – 5:30PM.
CONNECT 4, a CulturalDC public art project is generously supported by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and by Timothy Hyde. In-kind support for Nekisha Durrett’s project was provided by CSI Printing & Graphics.
