ARTIST HOUSING

Completed Projects

Brookland Artspace Lofts
CuDC consulted with Artspace Projects, Inc. to design, build and lease 39 artist apartments in the Brookland neighborhood.

The building opened in June, 2011 and is currently fully leased. Interested artists should visit the project’s website for information on joining the waitlist. Units are available to artist households earning up to 60% of area median income (AMI).

What is AMI?
Area Median Income (AMI) is the annual median income level for the Washington, DC metropolitan area, as calculated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Current limits can be seen at the DC Department of Housing and Community Development.

The artists represent a wide variety of disciplines, including: culinary arts, music, theatre, dance, visual arts, fashion and crafts. Designed specifically for artists, the building features large windows, wider hallways, a large elevator, communal exhibit space and a dance studio. The building also houses office space and classroom space for Dance Place.

The Loree Grand

In the summer of 2010, 15 artist households moved into the Loree Grand building at 250 K Street NE. The apartments were awarded to artist households making at or below 80% of AMI.

The artists represent a wide variety of disciplines, including; visual arts, music, theatre, film and arts education. The building is providing a home to veteran DC residents and artists joining the area from as far away as Oregon and Florida. The luxury high-rise allows the artist households to live steps from Downtown DC while enjoying such amenities as a fitness room and rooftop garden.

Mather Studios
In partnership with the Hoffman, Inc. & Gilford Construction, CuDC was selected by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to develop Mather Studios — 916 G Street, NW — as a center for creative living and industry.

Mather Studios includes 12 artist condominiums (out of 50 units total). The units were sold in 2003 to artists earning between 50–80% of area median income Area Median Income (AMI).

This unique residential building fosters creative activity, small business ideas and telecommuting by featuring large apartments designed to accommodate space for home-based entrepreneurs of all kinds. Residents include painters, photographers, musicians, film makers, glass artists, sculpture artists and more.

CuDC conducted an objective, selection process wherein income-qualified applicants with a demonstrated artistic practice were selected through a lottery process to purchase one of the 12 affordable units in Mather Studios.
