Public Art

CulturalDC offers a new paradigm for the DC area by re-imagining public art and activating unconventional locations. CulturalDC encourages surprising and inventive directions for art in the public realm.

A recent project is  CONNECT 4, a series of temporary public art projects in the Great Hall at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. This series created an opportunity for local contemporary artists to enliven the Library and respond to the space. The participating artists were Brian Davis, Nekisha Durrett, Sam Scharf and Anna Tsouhlarakis. CONNECT 4 opened in May and ran through October, 2013.

Our other recent projects include: the Sweet mural in Petworth, Construct pop-up installations in five vacant spaces in NoMa; and FREESPACE at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library.

We provide the following services to neighborhood-based institutions and real estate developers seeking to grow their public art offerings:

  • Research: Developing a vision; setting goals & objectives; evaluating potential sites/locations.
  • Development: Project planning & coordination; artist recruitment & selection; community outreach & engagement.
